It is not insignificant that a question about the state sanctioned, court ordered death of Terri Schiavo by dehydration made it into the top tier questions at the Republican debate last night.

Although Terri Schiavo’s death occurred in 2005, what happened to her takes place every single day in health care facilities across our nation. Indeed, the courts and pro-euthanasia movement exploited her situation to introduce our country to “Obamacare.” Every candidate missed the opportunity to make this connection last night.

We are grateful and recognize the two candidates who attempted to defend Terri’s right to life, although clarification of her condition is warranted as this debate continues.

Terri Schiavo was not dying, not in a coma, and not brain dead. Terri was not on a respirator, and she was not in vegetative state. Terri was a woman with a brain injury and simply needed to be fed through a feeding tube.

The elderly, persons with cognitive disabilities, and the medically vulnerable are having their medical rights denied every day and dying at the hands of hospital ‘death panels’ that are making decisions to withhold their food and water. To read how my own elderly father was denied appropriate medical care in Nashville, TN because he had Alzheimer’s Disease, read:

“These lives need to be defended and protected, and we applaud former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for recognizing the obvious by saying last night, ‘We offer federal safeguards for condemned murderers – why not a helpless woman whose parents just want to care for her for the rest of her life?’” said Bobby Schindler, Co-Executive Director of the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network and Terri’s brother.

“We also applaud Senator Rick Santorum for standing by Terri and our family in 2005, calling for a judicial review and stating during last night’s debate he ‘would do it again,’” added Schindler.

According to the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities, 20 million Americans – seven percent of the U.S. population – are affected by some type of brain injury.

Among them are hundreds of thousands of people with conditions similar to Terri’s, including members of our military returning home from battle.

Now more than ever this country needs a president who respects life at every stage and is willing to protect the weakest among us.

I have a friend going through this right now. Like many of us, she had no idea what was going on with her vision.

I cook with extra virgin olive oil and am a proponent of olive oil in cooking. There are many medical and scientific studies that have proven the health benefits of using olive oil in moderation in cooking. The Mayo Clinic site carries several articles that extol the virtues of cooking with olive oil  (although some medical sites are reporting olive oil may be as bad as a Big Mac when ingested). However, I could not find any articles on the Mayo Clinic website about the virtues of applying olive oil to your skin.

Personally, I use olive oil on my hands after I open the bottle. Especially my right hand gets the olive oil treatment because I open the bottle with my left hand, and the oil from the cap gets on my left hand, so I wipe it off and massage it into my right hand. In all my years of doing so, I have never seen the least bit of difference between my left hand, where the olive oil gets on my fingers and palm, and the right hand — the hand I massage the excess oil into.

And while I might occasionally use olive oil on my hands, I don’t use olive oil on my face and don’t recommend that my readers do so.

Olive Oil is Acne Forming

In spite of what the many olive oil and “natural” websites claim, olive oil is moderately comedogenic. This means applying olive oil on your skin can cause comedone or acne formation. Not only that, but using products like olive oil can potentially trap bacteria already present in sweat or moisture in the pores. See:

Going to Google Instead of an Expert

Unfortunately, the way Google works now you have articles from sites like eHow, LiveStrong or olive oil sites written by people with no medical training whatsoever ranking on page one. By and large, these writers get their information by regurgitating the information they found on page one of Google, so the same misinformation gets repeated, over and over. Several of the LiveStrong articles refer to the Mayo Clinic to lend credibility to their claims about the health benefits of Olive Oil in skin care, when in fact, the Mayo Clinic quotes are only about olive oil and diet. To make their points about skin care, they refer to sites about as trustworthy as “Olive Oil R Us.” Just because an article or website ranks high on Google doesn’t mean the writer or web owner has a clue what they are talking about or has gone past page one of Google to do their “research.”

Choosing a Witch Doctor Over the Mayo Clinic

Sadly, on one board, someone posted that a professionally trained and educated dermatologist stated “olive oil will clog pores” and then took advice from an untrained herbal home-remedy “specialist.” Really? Would YOU pick a witch doctor over the Mayo Clinic? Because that’s pretty much what you are doing when you let some natural-remedy proponent tell you that your doctor or dermatologist is wrong.

While some non-medical sites state that skin doesn’t absorb olive oil, most natural remedy sites loudly proclaim that olive oil is readily absorbed, which is simply not true.

Olive Oil Molecules Need a Carrier

In fact, olive oil molecules do not effectively penetrate the skin and need a “suitable carrier”  to get them past the skin’s protective barrier. Human skin comes equipped with a protective barrier that will not readily permit the passage of most lipids (fat) soluble portions of plants and oils. This protective barrier more readily permits the absorption of carefully formulated water soluble products with special carriers and there is plenty of proof that so-called “natural” and “essential” oils are not absorbed past the protective barrier.

Squalene

It is actually the SQUALENE in olive oil which is so good for your skin, and squalene is readily absorbed  “when mixed in the proper formulation in an oil-in-water emulsion,” NOT when applied with olive oil. See

Dangers of Olive Oil

Recently a friend told me of someone she knew who got a terrible infection from bacteria trapped in the skin by olive oil. Her “natural” solution to proper skin care caused her to have to get expensive medical care. I watched my own mother, who swore by natural remedies, try to cure a small, scaly spot on her leg with olive oil and other natural remedies. By the time I tricked her into seeing her doctor, her melanoma was so far advanced it killed her.

Who Do You Really Trust with You Skincare?

Next time you read an article telling you that some natural remedy is the best choice, please look at the URL. If it is “Oiive Oil R Us” or “Natural Remedies R Us” and not a reputable medical, educational, dermatological or scientific site, why are you trusting it with your skin, health & beauty?

“She is not eligible (for a transplant) because of her quality of life—Because of her mental delays”

These are the unbelievable words the parents of a small child heard when they met with a transplant team at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The family was going to donate the needed kidney, but they have so far been denied the chance.

The story of little Amelia, a precious little girl with a mental disability who is being denied a life-saving transplant is all too common, but it is a broader issue than precious children. I heard very similar words when my father had Alzheimer’s.

My father, a decorated WWII and Korean veteran, was otherwise healthy as a horse, and used to sit out in the garden with me singing children’s songs after many of his other memories had faded away. His intellect had diminished greatly but he still enjoyed going for walks and rides, singing songs, and especially, mealtime. He was still a human being.

When he broke his hip, it was all I could do to get him any kind of treatment. Dr. Bodner at the old Donelson Hospital in Nashville, TN didn’t think he deserved treatment because he “had no quality of life.” Sure, my father was in the middle stages of Alzheimer’s, but does THAT define “quality of life” any more or less than mental retardation or a physical handicap?

It took my father three months to die a slow, painful death in the hospital, with me begging almost daily for treatment for him that came too late or not at all. It’s a slippery slope that Donelson Hospital chose to go down — and this was TWENTY YEARS AGO. Imagine how far down this slope the medical community has slid in those 2 decades while we all sat quietly by and let the Terry Schiavos, mentally challenged children and adults, as well as the elderly slip away due to medical negligence and a legal system gone terribly wrong.

My own brother has mental disabilities. I dread the day he might need ongoing hospitalization or special care. Will his “quality of life” be judged worthy enough? Will my own “quality of life” be worth medical treatment at age 70 or 80?

Do you have someone in your family with a mental or physical handicap? Do you think as you age you may lose some of your faculties? Because this could be your future should you or your loved ones become less than perfect and require medical care.
